Xcel Energy is set to begin testing a cutting-edge technology to store wind energy in batteries — the first use of the technology in the United States for direct wind energy storage and a key to expanding the use of renewable energy, according to a recent company media advisory.
The test site is located at a wind farm near Luverne, Minn., and project managers on Monday conducted a special presentation and guided tour of the battery test site for members of the media, state and local government officials, and members of the public. The 20 50-kilowatt battery modules are roughly the size of two semi trailers and weigh approximately 80 tons.
